Our Mission
The Amaryllis Author Collective believes that escaping into a good book is a fundamental right, not a privilege. The joy of that magical world should be experienced by everyone, especially when we’re at some of our lowest lows.
Our Amaryllis Literacy Initiative is the active fulfillment of our mission to promote literacy and bring the joy of reading to individuals across the greater D.C. area. We focus on specialized access to literature for populations who need it the most: children and families experiencing housing instability (Bright Beginnings), sick children needing a distraction while in the hospital (Dr. Bear’s Closet), deployed service members and wounded veterans (Operation Paperback), and Title I students and their families (Bavis Foundation and Everybody Wins DC).
The Problem:
Many underserved communities face barriers beyond simply accessing a local library. More than one in every three D.C. residents is considered functionally illiterate (below basic literacy skills), limiting their ability to navigate ordinary tasks like filling out a job application or helping a child with homework. This isn’t just an educational crisis; it’s a profound socioeconomic one.
There are multiple reasons for this. The D.C. area’s linguistic diversity leads to a high concentration of adults who are learning English as a Second Language (ESL) and often lack foundational literacy skills. There is also the massive education gap in the lower socio-economic regions of the city. For instance, adults functioning at the lowest literacy levels are most likely to live in Wards 5, 7, and 8, where up to 20% of adults over the age of 25 in Ward 8 lack a high school diploma.
Adult literacy programs are historically underfunded and limited in their capacity to serve the estimated 119,000 adults in D.C. who need them. Title 1 schools lack essential classroom reading sets and struggle to keep up with filling in the crucial gaps for students who fall behind. With parents unable to help at home, this translates to an additional generation of adult functional illiteracy, continuing the cycle.
The Amaryllis Literacy Initiative Solution:

We raise targeted funds to donate our applicable age- and reading-level books directly to specialized non-profit literacy organizations across the D.C. area. With the diverse range of genres in our Collective— from high-interest fiction for adults to children’s titles— we can support readers from toddlers to lifelong learners.

We strategically partner with non-profits who can get our books directly into the hands of readers who most need their comfort and intellectual escape. These partnerships ensure our stories are available to provide that magical world and promote a lifelong love of reading.
