How to Read More: Make Reading Part of Your Daily Routine

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

As July comes to an end you may be eyeing the calendar with a weary eye. For our house, back to school means back to a lot of things… school, work, activities, shuttling around, and mostly a lot less time. As an author, I am always trying to fit in my writing time, which I talk about HERE, but as a reader, how does that time fit in?

A Different Kind of Workout

Reading is peaceful and relaxing, it is easy to view it as a luxury that just often doesn’t make the cut for things to fit into a busy day. You make time (hopefully) each day for working out, for sleep, and for eating, why? Because our physical wellness is important to keep us going, to tackle our never ending to-do list. But what are you doing to keep yourself mentally fit?

Reading not only gives you a peaceful time to recharge but it gives you a mental workout. It supports focus and memory growth, growth in vocabulary and subject matter. Reading enhances our mental fitness but in a day that is already so full, is adding something else into it achievable? Here are a few tips on how I have built reading into my day that will hopefully work for you.

Set Realistic Goals.

Setting goals allows us to set a plan to achieve them. If you are just building reading into your routine, four books a week may not be a realistic goal. Unachievable goals in anything often leads to abandoning it altogether. Be sure to set goals that allow you to create a balanced plan to achieve. Consider different mediums of books, which may include audiobooks, ebooks and print. Remember goals can always be adjusted. You may have started with a goal of 20 books in a year, but realize you will be able to achieve more. Celebrate your achievement, but adjust your goals.

Rethink the time you have.

Our day is often filled with small bits of useless time. The five minutes before an appointment, not enough time to involve yourself in an activity, but often that is enough time to scroll through posts on social media. Sitting in line for pickup for the kids, you aren’t in a space to get much done, so you watch a few random Instagram reels. At the end of the day you don’t have any accomplishments to show for that time. However, if you carry a book with you and read a few pages during each of those times, you could have accomplished reading multiple chapters.

Excuse yourself.

Sometimes life gets the best of us. If you didn’t get your reading time in, don’t beat yourself up. The goal is to use reading to build a healthier you and that comes with routine and balance. If you have reading in your daily schedule more often than not, give yourself grace on the days that you miss. Life happens and in all areas of life we have to remind ourselves this is okay.

Share your reading time.

Sharing accomplishments can increase confidence and motivation, we see it all the time with physical workouts. Normalize sharing your reading accomplishments as well. There are several different platforms you can use to share your completed reads and reading progress. I use Goodreads, which allows me to mare books I want to read, books in progress, and books completed for each year. I can review books I love and books I….loved much less, if you are on Goodreads connect with me! You can also start a book log, I have a free downloadable book log HERE. When you add a new book to your log take a picture and share it.

Instead of putting “reading time” on your calendar, block it as time to “work on improving the function of critical organ” and make your brain and your health your priority!

Library Community

Why are Libraries Important?

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

We equate libraries to books, but they offer so much more!

Do you have big summer reading goals? If you are looking for a summer reading program, chances are you don’t need to look any further than your local library.

Library

Why Libraries Are Important?

I’ve always loved libraries. Those of you who’ve read my newsletter in the past already know this about me. But today, I want to dig a bit deeper into why libraries are important and share a bit more about their history and magic.

I grew up very close to my grandmother. She passed away a few years ago, and I still miss her greatly.

My grandmother was a woman ahead of her time and a true inspiration. She worked as a librarian in one of the largest public libraries on Long Island and then volunteered in my school library after she retired.

Growing up, my grandmother creatively shared her love of the library with my sister and me. She set up a pretend library in her basement by pasting envelopes into the back of each book. We then used index cards and stamps to “check out” books, taking turns playing librarian and patron. (This was obviously long before the computerized check out systems of today lol!)

She also taught me about the history of the public library system in America. Although Ben Franklin is credited as setting up the first public library in Philadelphia in 1731- this wasn’t exactly true. You see, Ben Franklin’s library was a subscription service where patrons had to pay to belong. This obviously still kept barriers in place as to who could avail themselves of this service.

The first real tax-supported “public” library wasn’t created until 1833 in Petersborough, New Hampshire. The Petersborough library was the first of its kind, not only in the US, but in the world! A truly public library available to everyone, regardless of class? It was groundbreaking.

Today, the library continues to serve as a class equalizer, providing not only access to books, but much-needed services for the community. Public Wi-Fi, computer access, tax help, language classes and more. Most people are unaware of the far-reaching public services the library provides, but you name it and the library probably provides it in some form.

As an author, I am always excited for the chance to get my book into libraries nationwide. Contributing to institutions that serve their communities as well as sharing an important piece of history with readers is goose bump invoking! There’s truly a form of honor I feel to contribute and further this community institution. Because I know it will be at the library where any child or adult, regardless of money in their pocket, might stumble across my book on a shelf and find escape in its pages. And that- is magic!

Please help me and other authors create this magic and opportunities for other readers. When you read a book you love, YOU can get a book into a library!

Be Part of a Library Movement

  • Ask your local library if you can request a book to be carried.
  • The form they provide you will usually ask for your information (including library card number), plus details about the title, including the ISBN number.
    • You can find the ISBN number for any book by googling the title of the book and “ISBN number.” (You can also find mine on my Amazon book pages)
  • Fill the form in, press submit and you’re good to go!
    • Obviously there is no guarantee your library will choose to purchase it, but my experience has been that MOST of the time they do!
  • But, it’s important that you as READERS help authors with this because most libraries have some guardrails around these purchase requests!
    • Generally you need to have a current library card to put in a request.
    • Most libraries will not accept purchase requests from authors for their own books.

Please be part of getting your favorite authors into your local library. If you don’t see a book listed, put in your request! (And let an author know when you do, so we can thank you!!)

Word Games

Word Games: There is a Word for That!

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

I am not sure if it is the author side of me or the reader side that is more drawn to word play, but I have found challenging my vocabulary capabilities a fun way to decompress. While some find “mindless” clicking as time to unwind, word games allow me to shut down from the responsibilities of the day while still engaging in an activity that somehow feels constructive, or at least that is how I justify it.

Do you remember a few years ago when Wordle took the world by storm? Wordle was created by a software engineer in Brooklyn for his partner during the pandemic. First, it was just a private word guessing game the two of them played, but then they added it to a family What’s App group and before long it was shared with friends and continued to grow. After seeing the widespread appeal, it was released to the world in October 2021.

Wordle is probably one of the simplest interface and concepts imaginable. It is literally just a five letter guessing game with six chances to guess the word of the day. Guess a letter correct and it changes color depending on placement and inclusion in the word. But Wordle went beyond a solitary word game, it created a community around….words. Beyond the friends you engage with, you can even stoke that competitive spirit by sharing your results on your social media feed with a widget blurring out the letters to prevent spoilers.

If you are looking for some fun word games to add to your day I thought I would share a few favorites!

Looking for some brain stimulating games to decompress with? Here are some of my favorite word games that I enjoy!

SpellTower

Think Wordle meets Tetris. You have to find words in a tower of letters, as you clear them out you remove letters. You goal is to clear out all of the letters while maximizing your score. Be careful of those Q’s and that they aren’t falling away from the U’s!

Scrabble Go!

Who doesn’t love a classic. Whether you have space for a word or not is all on you and how you have built your space. This one is also fun to play with family or a friend. Send the board back and forth and see if your vocabulary is extensive enough to build words with the highest point value. Enjoy the pastime of a traditional favorite game without a bag full of tiles with you!

Words with Friends

Arguably words with friends is Scrabble. If you know and love the classic Scrabble, you will likely enjoy Words with Friends, which one you like better may come down to aesthetic. Words with Friends has a few more tiles, and the placement of bonus point and special spaces are laid out different between the game board. Again you pass the game back and forth between friends and increase your points based on the point value of the letters and spaces you are using.

TypeShift

Rubik’s cube and a crossword puzzle. This one is fun! You have clues to solve for a word but with an extra challenge, you need to move the letters up and down to align to spell the word you are looking for. This one is not a multiplayer game, so you are challenging yourself but there are also leaderboards if you are craving a higher level of competitiveness.

FreeRice

Practice your vocabulary, grammar and trivia skills, for a great cause. Get an answer right and you earn 10 grains of rice for the UN World Food Programme. Private sponsors match the rice grain donations generated within Freerice, triggering a financial payment to WFP. This money goes into the pot of “greatest needs” to support the organization’s ongoing emergencies. Play HERE.

Spelling Bee

This game challenges you to use specific letters in creating as many words as you can, you can rearrange the letters but the actual letters and the must use letters stay the same. You can track your weekly stats and attempt to reach genius level! Play HERE.

Where do you land with your screen time? Are there any word games that you enjoy challenging yourself with?

Joining a Book Club

Joining a Book Club

Have you hit a reading slump? Do you need to shake things up a bit? Check out the benefits of joining a book club!

Book Club

Book Club. The excuse for women to get together, drink wine, and take a night off from life while discussing some great literature. I’ve participated in a number of book clubs over the years and they’ve forged some of my greatest connections and conversations. It’s amazing how fast you can forge a friendship over a shared love of reading! They’ve also been my way to break the ice and find my “peeps” in new chapters of my life- moving to a new place, starting my children at a new school etc. Joining a book club can have many benefits.

If you follow my blog or Goodreads profile you know I’m an avid reader. And I read a variety of genres and authors. But the thing I love about Book Club is it forces me out of my comfort zone.

One of my current book clubs has what we call the “magic bag”. On the first day we got together we all tossed suggestions into the bag. Each month we choose something from the bag and that’s the book we read. Since we all come from a variety of tastes and backgrounds, we’ve read quite the gamut of books. Things I wouldn’t necessarily have chosen myself and yet enjoyed immensely.

I think it’s important to spin the wheel sometimes in our reading choices. Whether it’s by joining a book club or entering a reading challenge that’s accompanied by new book/genre choices (like a reading bingo or master list of categories, I’ve added a few for inspiration below), it’s great to shake things up. How else can we avoid those-“nothing’s grabbing me” reading moments?

What are some of your favorite ways to shake things up when you fall into a reading slump? Leave a comment below to share!

Science of Journaling

The Science of Journaling- How it helps relieve stress.

Can journaling actually help relieve stress? Read below to see the science of journaling!

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Journaling Mindfulness

Journaling Ideas and Science

What do journaling ideas and science have in common? A legitimate way for you to get your brain working and relax. Scientists have conducted studies and discovered an actual correlation between not just writing down your emotions, but that even the physical act of writing something by hand alone can be a stress release.

You’ve seen me write before about the benefits of journaling and how it’s helped me. Join me in examining more of the science of journaling!

Benefits of the Writing Process

Believe it or not, there are simple benefits to a journaling practice. For starters, a journal can be a safe place to “dump” your thoughts and feelings. There are multiple reasons why processing your feelings on paper can be beneficial. One, paper and the writing process can be a distancing factor. The act of writing, itself, slows down our thought process so we can potentially be more objective about what we’re experiencing rather than just sitting and stewing with our thoughts in our head.

It can also be used as a record and opportunity to spot patterns in our own behavior. As mentioned earlier, sometimes we need distance to be objective about our own faults. Sometimes it takes seeing them in black and white for us to take ownership of our own bad habits and flaws. This is also why so many therapists suggest journaling as a homework portion of the therapy process.

The Brain Chemistry of the Writing Process

As I mentioned earlier, there is a literal science behind the journaling process. We all know the fight or flight response to stress. But did you know that writing can actually help tame that response? Yes, there’s the slowing down the thought process, but in addition to that there is actual brain chemistry triggered. Our limbic system, or specifically the amgydala is responsible for processing emotions. This is the part of our body that triggers that fight or flight response.

A brain imaging study done in UCLA showed that the physical act of writing reduces activity in the amygdala, therefore calming down that fight or flight reflex. So, it’s not imagined, writing really does help you reduce that “overwhelmed” feeling.

Increasing Productivity

Another study also found that writing before a stressful event like a test or big presentation actually increased brain efficiency. Again, that act of releasing stressful thoughts and worries, calmed their overactive brain activity so it was then able to focus and perform more effectively.

Tip of the Iceberg

There are plenty more studies and reasons to prove how journaling and science are connected. But honestly, I’m a believer in trying it for myself. So, try sitting down and writing for just a few minutes. Set a timer if it helps. Give yourself zero expectations and write whatever comes to mind. See how you feel when you’re done. I can almost guarantee you’ll feel lighter.

Happy Journaling!

The Types of Readers: What kind are you?

The Types of Readers: What kind are you?

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Do you know what type of reader you are? Read on to find out! This personality discussion will help you choose your next book recommendations!

Types of Readers

The Different Types of Readers

Were you aware there are different types of readers? Much like personality tests there are definitely different classifications for reader-types. So how would you classify yourself? Read on to see. And finding your reading type just might help you weed through your book recommendations!

The Mood Reader

These are the types of readers who need to survey the entire shelf or pile of books before choosing their next read. They need to calculate their choice based off a variety of variables. How heavy was the last book I read? What is going on in my life? Am I stressed at work? Do I need a light escape? Do I need a book I can binge in a day?

Basically, they complete an internal assessment every time they finish a book and choose their next read based off their current mood and needs. (I’m definitely this type of reader by the way. Which is why you’ll always see my reading choices lighten when I’m bogged down with writing projects lol.)

The Organized Planner

If any of you are on Instagram and follow bookstagrammers you know some of the people I’m referring to here. These are the readers who share their list of planned books to read at the beginning of each month and ACTUALLY follow through! They are able to calculate their reading speed, schedules etc. and plan for an approximate calendar of reads for the month. I’m in awe of these folks! They’re not only mathematicians, they also must have will-power of steel to follow through and not get way-laid.

The Squirrel Syndrome Reader

These people are the exact opposite of the organized planners. These types of readers are the ones who have multiple books going on at once. They get distracted easily by new book recommendations and might not even finish a book that’s not grabbing them- gasp! If you recommend a book in conversation, they’re the ones who will buy it off Amazon on the spot and perhaps even start it as soon as it arrives.

The Library Reader

These are the readers who allow the library to choose their next book for them. They have a bazillion hold requests and choose their next book based off what comes in for them at the library.

The Forgotten Gem Reader

These readers accumulate a HUGE library of books and then sit on them forever. They forget who recommended what or how long ago they purchased a book. But they peruse and choose a book off the shelf and gush over long ago gems. They are the friend who is gushing about a book that was popular five years ago.

Do you fall into any of these types of readers? Can you think of any I missed? I’d love to see you add them in the comments below. Thanks for reading!
